Course overview

The BA Degree in History is a Single Honours Degree. If you are fascinated by History, then this degree is the natural choice for you. You will:

  • Examine specific historical issues with specialist staff
  • Study many historical topics in-depth through courses designed specifically and exclusively for your programme
  • Undertake individual research projects on central historical questions

History is one of the most powerful forces in forming social and political attitudes and, as Ireland's contested past illustrates, it influences every aspect of present day life. Studying History makes us aware that our world today did not take on its current appearance by chance, but as a result of specific developments and decisions taken in the past. You'll ask questions of the past, and in finding the answers, you will learn skills that will prove valuable for your career and life. For example

  • Information management: How to find information from books, newspapers, correspondence, government papers and the internet
  • Textual analysis: How to tell fact from fiction, to test arguments and evidence
  • Fluency in oral and written communication: How to organise evidence into a coherent argument

Pádraig de Brún;

BA (History);

"As a mature student any doubts about returning to university life simply evaporated in the welcoming atmosphere on NUI Galway campus. Friends were easily made and the staff were solicitous and helpful. The History Department excelled in their First Year syllabus. It seamlessly combined the Irish and European experiences in The Age of the Great War (Semester 1) and The Age of the French Revolution (Semester 2) to provide comprehensive analyses of the respective periods."
