(Structured PhD) Child and Youth Research

The PhD in Child and Youth Research is a four year, full-time, structured, cross-institutional PhD delivered as part of a collaboration between NUIG and Trinity College Dublin. In years one and two, students will take taught courses. In years three and four, students will concentrate on the preparation of a substantial dissertation, which they will have begun in year one.  

Course structure
All students must complete a major dissertation (c.80,000). By Easter in year one, students will submit a doctoral research proposal which must be approved by the Course Committee. They will be allocated to an individual research supervisor, who will be a member of the academic staff of the relevant Schools in TCD and NUI Galway. Annual progress reports will be required, and dissertations will be examined by an internal examiner and an external examiner.

The taught element of the course will be assessed by a combination of attendance/ participation and end of semester assignments. Students will complete two essays per academic year in years 1 and 2, as well as research assignments arising from the research methods modules. Not all modules will require written assignments.
