Armed Conflict in Comparative Perspective

A conference of the Centre for the Study of Nationalism and Organised Violence featuring: Prof. Kristine Höglund (Uppsala University, Sweden) Prof. Stathis Kalyvas (Yale University, USA) Prof. Eric Kaufmann (Birkbeck College, University of London) Prof. Tom Lodge (University of Limerick, Ireland) Prof. Siniša Malešević (University College Dublin, Ireland) Dr Niall Ó Dochartaigh (National University of Ireland Galway) Prof. Brendan O'Leary (University of Pennsylvania, USA) Prof. Martin Shaw (Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals/University of Sussex, UK) This multidisciplinary conference brings together leading scholars working on aspects of armed conflict from a range of disciplinary perspectives. It addresses key issues of concern to sociologists, political scientists and historians studying inter-state wars, civil wars, armed conflicts, urban violence and insurgencies. This conference is supported by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Moore Institute and the Institute for Business, Social Sciences and Public Policy, NUI Galway. Professor Kapcia is a distinguished expert in modern and contemporary Cuban history and politics. He has published extensively in the field, including Cuba: Island of Dreams (2000), Cuba in Revolution: a History since the Fifties (2008). His forthcoming book examines literary culture in Cuba since 1959.

The Regulation of Continental Shelf Development: Present Status and Future Directions

The School of Law is co-organising and co-sponsoring a conference on “The Regulation of Continental Shelf Development: Present Status and Future Directions” which will take place from 20 to 22 June 2012 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Conference is co-organized with leading specialist research institutes at the University of Virginia, Dalhousie University, the National University of Singapore, the Korean Maritime Institute, Bergen University, and McInnes Cooper Halifax.
The conference is the 36th Annual Conference of the Center of Oceans Law and Policy at UVa and brings together international experts to examine a broad range of pressing regulatory matters concerning offshore industries in light of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
NUI Galway was also the principal organiser and co-hosted the 30th Annual COLP Conference on “Law, Science and Ocean Management” held at Dublin Castle in 2006.

2012 Sino-European Symposium on Environment and Health (SESEH 2012)

The 2012 Sino-European Symposium on Environment and Health (SESEH 2012) provides an internationally leading platform for interaction between scientists, consultants, and public servants engaged in the multi-disciplinary areas of environment and health. With the fast economic growth, the importance of environment and health is widely recognized in China, and China welcomes international experts for collaboration. This symposium provides an opportunity for a direct communication between experts from China and the rest of the world, and helps to foster and develop international collaborations with China, the 2nd largest economy of the world.
 
The conference venue is the campus of National University of Ireland, Galway, within walking distance of Galway’s city centre.
